Equipment

  • Large skillet
  • 9x13-inch baking dish
  • Wooden spoon
  • Measuring cups and spoons

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef 85/15 works best
  • 1 small onion finely diced
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried mustard powder
  • to taste salt and freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese divided
  • 1 can (10.5 oz) refrigerated biscuit dough 8 biscuits
  • 2 tablespoons butter melted
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon fresh parsley chopped, optional for garnish

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish and set aside.
  • Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add ground beef and diced onion, breaking up the meat with a wooden spoon as it cooks.
  • Cook for 6 to 8 minutes until the beef is browned and the onion is soft. Drain excess grease if there's more than a tablespoon.
  • Stir in minced garlic, Worcestershire sauce, smoked paprika, and dried mustard. Cook for 1 minute until fragrant. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  • Transfer the beef mixture to the prepared baking dish and spread evenly. Sprinkle 3/4 cup cheddar cheese over the top.
  • Separate the biscuits and cut each into quarters. Arrange biscuit pieces over the beef and cheese, leaving small gaps between them.
  • Sprinkle the remaining 1/4 cup cheddar cheese over the biscuits. Bake for 18 to 22 minutes until biscuits are golden brown and cooked through.
  • While baking, mix melted butter with garlic powder. As soon as the bake comes out of the oven, brush the garlic butter over the hot biscuits.
  • Garnish with fresh parsley if desired. Let cool for 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • For extra garlic flavor, add a pinch of garlic powder to the beef mixture along with other seasonings.
  • Don't skip draining the grease from the beef to prevent a soggy bottom.
  • Cutting biscuits into quarters gives better coverage and more even baking.
  • Brush garlic butter on while still hot for better absorption and that signature Cheddar Bay taste.
