- 2 slices thick white bread or sourdough
- 2 large eggs at room temperature
- 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella or cheddar cheese
- 1 tablespoon butter softened
- 1/4 teaspoon sea salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper freshly ground
- 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 tablespoon fresh chives or parsley for garnish
- cooking spray for air fryer basket
Spread softened butter on both sides of each bread slice. This creates the crispy golden exterior.
Using the bottom of a glass or small bowl, press firmly into the center of each bread slice to create a deep well that will hold the egg.
Spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray and place the prepared bread slices inside in a single layer.
Carefully crack one egg into the well of each bread slice.
Season with salt, pepper, and garlic powder.
Sprinkle the shredded cheese around the egg and over the exposed bread areas.
Set your air fryer to 340°F and cook for 8 minutes for a runny yolk, or 10 minutes for a more set yolk.
Remove carefully with a spatula and let rest for 1 minute before serving. Garnish with fresh chives or parsley.
- Use room temperature eggs for more even cooking
- Press the indent deeply enough to prevent egg overflow
- Check at the 6-minute mark if you have a powerful air fryer
- Add different cheeses like pepper jack or Swiss for variety
- For meal prep, prepare buttered bread with indents ahead and store covered in the refrigerator for up to 2 days
