- 1 tablespoon unsalted butter for greasing
- 2 cups fresh strawberries hulled and halved
- 1 1/4 cups whole or 2% milk
- 2/3 cup granulated sugar
- 3 large eggs room temperature
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon fine salt
- powdered sugar for serving
Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C) and butter an 8- or 9-inch shallow baking dish.
Arrange the strawberries evenly over the bottom of the prepared dish.
Whisk the milk, sugar, eggs, and vanilla in a large bowl until smooth.
Gradually whisk in the flour and salt. Strain the batter if it contains lumps.
Pour the batter over the strawberries and bake for 50 to 60 minutes, until the edges are golden and the center gently wobbles.
Cool for at least 15 minutes, dust with powdered sugar, and serve warm or chilled.
- Dry fresh strawberries thoroughly before using.
- A slight wobble in the center is normal because the custard continues setting as it cools.
- Store covered in the refrigerator for up to three days.
